Mayor's Choice Award Reception - Pirjo Berg
May

Mayor's Choice Award Reception - Pirjo Berg

Pirjo Berg's artwork is a captivating fusion of her Finnish heritage, deep appreciation for landscapes, and profound fascination with geology. Through her art, she seamlessly weaves together elements from her childhood, such as traditional Finnish decorations like striped rugs and woven hangings, which imbue her work with layers of nostalgia and longing. As an immigrant distanced from her homeland, Pirjo's longing for the past is palpable in her paintings, watercolors, and clay work, where she endeavors to encapsulate the essence of geological time and the ephemeral nature of memories.

In her exploration of geological formations, Pirjo masterfully translates the vastness of geological time into tangible forms, skillfully capturing the intricate essence of strata in her paintings and clay work. Her lines exhibit a unique dynamism, at times appearing nervous and diagonally adrift, while clusters of electric blue color evoke imagery ranging from glaciers to vast oceans. Through her signature lines, Pirjo conjures up vivid depictions of nature's forces, from swirling clouds to crashing waves, creating a visual symphony akin to seismographic vibrations.

While Pirjo's style leans towards the more traditional and European, she avoids appropriation, instead channeling a pastoral and romantic sensibility inspired by the natural world. Her art becomes a form of visual music, resonating with viewers through its evocative portrayal of nature's beauty and the passage of time. Through Pirjo Berg's artwork, viewers are invited to embark on a journey of reflection and contemplation, connecting with their memories and the timeless rhythms of the earth.

Pirjo Berg was born in Helsinki, Finland. In 2000, she received her BFA from the School of Art and Media, Tampere, Finland. The same year she established her studio practice in Seattle, WA. In 2005 she graduated from the Artists Trust EDGE-Program. She now lives in Grand Forks, ND.

Poetry Potluck with Brendan Stermer

Poetry Potluck with Brendan Stermer

The East Grand Forks Campbell Library will host a National Poetry Month Celebration on April 25 at 6:30pm. The event will open with a “Poetry Potluck” - an opportunity for anyone in attendance to share a poem that they love and say a bit about what it means to them. Participation is not mandatory and individuals with no knowledge of poetry are encouraged to attend and listen.

The event will also feature a reading by a local poet, Brendan Stermer of East Grand Forks. Stermer is the author of Forgotten Frequencies, winner of the 2023 Poetry of the Plains and Prairie’s Award and published by North Dakota State University Press in December. He is also the host of Interesting People Reading Poetry - a podcast where well-known artists and cultural luminaries read a favorite poem and share what it means to them. In recent years, Interesting People Reading Poetry has been featured by Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the Irish Independent, and named a "best poetry podcast" by the Los Angeles Review of Books Podcast Review.

According to Stermer, the poems in “Forgotten Frequencies” are in conversation with many voices from the literary history of the upper Midwest - from the journals of the 19th century French cartographer Joseph Nicollet to the 20th century prairie poets Tom Hennen and Robert Bly. Stermer’s reading will include information on local literary history and the influence of Midwestern writers on different aspects of the collection.

The Poetry of the Plains and Prairie’s Award is an annual nationwide contest hosted by North Dakota State University Press. Each year, publication is awarded to a chapbook - a short poetry collection of approximately 30 pages - which “deftly captures the feeling of, as well as the reality of, living on the plains and prairies.” The winning chapbook is letterpress printed at The Braddock News in Braddock, ND and assembled by hand by students in the publishing program at NDSU in Fargo.

This is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council through funding from The McKnight Foundation.

NCMOA Concerts in the Gallery - Ji Su Jung

“Ji Su Jung’s performance was dazzling—filled with breathtaking virtuosity but also beautifully shaped with extraordinary color and nuance.” – JoAnn Falletta

The first solo percussionist to ever receive the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Ji Su Jung has a distinctive musical voice that is instantly recognizable for its depth and lyricism.

Born in South Korea, Ms. Jung began studying marimba at age three, a rarity among percussionists. Since launching her career as a soloist, she has performed concertos with such leading orchestras and conductors as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with Marin Alsop, the Houston Symphony with Daniel Hege, the Aspen Festival Orchestra with Michael Stern, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra with Peter Oundjian, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic with JoAnn Falletta, the Grand Rapids Symphony with Marcelo Lehninger, and the Boise Philharmonic with Eric Garcia.

“Ji Su Jung’s performance of the Kevin Puts Marimba Concerto was dazzling—filled with breathtaking virtuosity but also beautifully shaped with extraordinary color and nuance,” remarked conductor JoAnn Falletta about Ms. Jung’s performance with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Ms. Jung has recorded the Marimba Concerto of Puts, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, with the Baltimore Symphony and Marin Alsop, to be released on the Naxos label in early 2023.

Equally at home as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and collaborative artist, Ms. Jung has performed solo recitals in such venues as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ newly renovated David Geffen Hall. An active chamber musician, she frequently performs with The Percussion Collective, an all-star collection of young percussionists, of which she has been a core member since its inception. As part of The Percussion Collective, she has recorded Garth Neustadter’s Seaborne, anticipated to be released in 2023. As a collaborative artist, she has also appeared at Yellow Barn and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, where she performed with notable artists such as Gilbert Kalish and the late Roger Tapping.

The recipient of numerous awards and competition prizes, in 2022, she received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, becoming the first percussionist to receive the award. She won both First Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 2018 Ima Hogg Competition of the Houston Symphony, as well as a top prize at the 2015 International Marimba Competition in Linz, Austria. She has also appeared as a young artist in residence with American Public Media’s highly popular radio program Performance Today, hosted by Fred Child.

Recognized internationally as a pedagogue, Ms. Jung serves on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. She has taught master classes at New York University’s Steinhardt School, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Michigan State University, and Beijing Central Conservatory in China, among other schools.

Ms. Jung holds a bachelor’s degree from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, where she attended thanks to a generous grant from The Brookby Foundation. She also holds a master’s degree and an artist diploma from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Robert van Sice.

Ji Su is a musical ambassador for Adams Percussion, Pearl/Adams, and Vic Firth percussion companies.

"The Wild Project" Opening Reception

You're cordially invited to the opening reception of "The Wild Project: Monsters of Sendak" on April 4th from 5 - 7 pm at Arts for Vets location, 215 North 3rd Street Suite #100, Grand Forks, ND. Join us as we celebrate the vibrant interpretations of Maurice Sendak's iconic "Monsters" by talented local artists.

Inspired by Francis Alys's renowned "The Fabiola Project," we encouraged artists to explore their unique styles while incorporating two of Sendak's beloved monsters. The resulting artworks promise a dynamic display of creativity within a shared framework.

Drawing from Alys's approach, the exhibition will be curated to present a unified visual experience. Like the clusters in "The Fabiola Project," each artwork will be arranged to form a cohesive whole, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the collective narrative.

A unifying element of the exhibition is the use of an Indigo blue background, a nod to Ayls’s original imagery. This consistent backdrop ensures a harmonious visual impact while allowing diverse interpretations of the source material.

Please join us for an evening of art, imagination, and community as we celebrate the enduring legacy of Maurice Sendak and the boundless creativity of our local artists.

NDMOA Concerts in the Gallery - Pacifica Quartet

With a career spanning nearly three decades, the multiple Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet has achieved international recognition as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. The Quartet is known for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often-daring repertory choices. Having served as quartet-in-residence at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music for the past decade, the Quartet also leads the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and was previously the quartet-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2021, the Pacifica Quartet received a second Grammy Award for Contemporary Voices, an exploration of music by three Pulitzer Prize-winning composers: Shulamit Ran, Jennifer Higdon, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

Formed in 1994, the Pacifica Quartet quickly won chamber music’s top competitions, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award. In 2002 the ensemble was honored with Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and the appointment to Lincoln Center’s The Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two), and in 2006 was awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. With its powerful energy and captivating, cohesive sound, the Pacifica has established itself as the embodiment of the senior American quartet sound.

The Pacifica Quartet has proven itself the preeminent interpreter of string quartet cycles, harnessing the group’s singular focus and incredible stamina to portray each composer’s evolution, often over the course of just a few days. Having given highly acclaimed performances of the complete Carter cycle in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Houston; the Mendelssohn cycle in Napa, Australia, New York, and Pittsburgh; and the Beethoven cycle in New York, Denver, St. Paul, Chicago, Napa, and Tokyo (in an unprecedented presentation of five concerts in three days at Suntory Hall), the Quartet presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago, New York, Montreal, and at London’s Wigmore Hall. The Quartet has been widely praised for these cycles, with critics calling the concerts “brilliant,” “astonishing,” “gripping,” and “breathtaking.”
